Look Better, Live Longer!
Make The Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life
If you are over age fifty there is no doubt that you would like to make the rest of your life the best of your life. Why not also look better and feel younger? Are you on the path to make this happen? Do a quick self-evaluation. Do you look as good as you would like to look? Do you feel as good as you would like to feel. Do you have the energy and enthusiasm for life that you really want to have? In matters of health mature adults tend to fall into one of two groups. The first are those who have developed a lifestyle that fosters health and vitality. The second are those who are not doing what they need to do in order to look and feel as good as they would like.
Where do you place yourself, in the first group or in the second? Keep in mind that. an unhealthy lifestyle increases the possibility of developing emotional and physical disabilities. Let’s examine some health facts that might surprise you. The United States is an industrialized wealthy country. Health costs are soaring. Americans spend a lot of money every year on weight loss programs and on medical expenses. Is this money well spent? What is the return on our health investment?
The return is poor. For example, Johns Hopkins University studied the health of Americans compared to the overall health of the 13 wealthiest industrialized countries. We were ranked second to last. The World Health Organization studied the 23 countries that spend the most for health care. The United States was number one in spending( twice the average of the other countries) but was second to last in healthy life expectancy. These are sobering facts. What are the reasons for this dismal showing?
One reason is that the statistics are partly skewed by the numbers of uninsured citizens who may be receiving substandard care. Another reason is that in this country mainstream medicine focuses on treating illness rather than on preventing it. Your doctors are doing a fairly good job treating you when you are sick, but are still missing the mark by not focusing on keeping you healthy.
However, the primary reason for the poor health of so many Americans is that so many are not taking care of themselves. Obesity, lack of exercise and stress are killers. Americans are moving less, eating too much of the wrong kinds of food and handling stress poorly.
These unhealthy lifestyle traits have caused an obesity epidemic that has alarmed health care providers. Americans are getting fatter and our children, following our bad example are also getting fatter. Obesity has become an epidemic of such increasing prevalence that it is now one of the most pervasive health problems in the country. The problem has become so important that the surgeon general of the United States has issued a warning and a call to action for Americans to get thinner and healthier
The statisticians tell us that there are over 60 million obese adults in the United States carrying an excess of 2.3 billion pounds of fat! The percentage of Americans who are obese has increased from 14% in 1980 to just over 30% in the year 2,000. The percent of children ages 6 to 11 who are obese has more than doubled since 1980. More alarming the percent of obese adolescents has more than tripled since 1980. What this translates to is that type II diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents . Because of obesity and for the first time in recent memory our children will have a shorter life expectancy than that our generation.
Obesity increases the risk of many diseases. Here is a short list:
Dyslipidemia (increase of fats in the blood)
Type II diabetes
Coronary artery disease
Cancer (endometrial, breast and colon)
Obesity related illnesses are overwhelming our health care system. It has been estimated that cost of treating type II diabetes and its complications is over 63 billion dollars a year! The cost of treating the other diseases listed above has been estimated at 33 billion dollars a year. This means that almost 100 billion dollars a year is being spent to treat diseases that in many instances could have been prevented by a healthier lifestyle and by losing weight. If we were to add the cost of treating illnesses caused by smoking the numbers would be even more astronomical.
What is the remedy? For example will dieting help? Americans are infatuated with diets. They spend millions of dollars a year in order to shed unwanted pounds only to watch them come back. Diets do not work. Dieting is designed to fail. It has been shown over and over again that unless there is a lifestyle change 98% of those who go on a diet will gain the weight back. Diets are popular because Americans have been programmed to believe that they will work. Weight loss is a huge industry with a large advertising budget and a mystique and an aura that has been carefully crafted. There are many misconceptions about diets. We call these half truths and untruths diet myths.
