How Much Sodium is in your Packaged Food?

Packaged foods are the source of most of the sodium that we consume. Since excess sodium in the diet is a major health concern the FDA has been leaning on manufacturers to use less sodium in their packaged foods. There has been some limited success. A recent survey found that on the average sodium content in packaged foods dropped nearly 400 milligrams per day per person between 2000 and 2014.


This a step in the right direction, but in spite of this improvement packaged foods continue to supply excessive amounts of sodium.
