Supplements To Boost Sexual Function

It has been estimated that about 40% of women and 30% of men have some degree of sexual dysfunction The number of course increases with age.. Historically drugs to stimulate sexual desire and function have been found in almost all cultures. Needless to say the interest in these substances has been and remains great.


The breakthrough drug Viagra led the way to the new world of sexual stimulation. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra work by enhancing blood flow to the penis in men and the clitoris in women by facilitating the amount of nitric oxide, a vasodilator in the blood. We know that these drugs work, but there are side effects that could be a problem and the cost is almost always a problem.


For that reason more and more  people are looking to “natural” alternatives. This is where the problems begin. Those of you who hve followed this blog are aware that the federal government does not monitor or in any way control the claims made by manufacturers of supplements. This of course  applies to the ads that pop up  on the sporting pages of your local newspaper. Whatever they say do not believe it.


Furthermore no governmental agency  tests  these products to determine whether they  contain the ingredients found on the label and in the amounts they claim. More importantly you have no assurance that there are not any harmful contaminants such as lead..


Keep this in mind while we review the highlights of some of the most common holistic remedies for sexual dysfunction.


L Arginine is a nonessential amino acid that many bodybuilders take to enhance muscular development. It also helps the body produce nitric oxide. L Arginine has been tested in a double blind placebo study that reported 30% of those who took 5,000 milligrams of L Arginine a day had improved sexual function compared to 11% Who took a placebo This is not exciting news but  Arginine is relatively safe. This could be a safe supplement to try..



Yohimbe is made from the bark of a tree grown in Africa. This bark contains the chemical yohimbine that has been marginally effective as an aphrodisiac, Trials on yohimbe have given mixed results. 


Red Ginsing

The results with red ginsing were more encouraging. In one study from Korea 66% of those who took 300 milligrams a day reported increased sexual function. Of course this was not a controlled study and it is not possible to draw legitimate conclusions. 


Since there have been no dramatic results from single ingredient supplements, why not look at multiple ingredient supplements. A combination of horny goat weed, maca and polypody has been studied and although there has been no statistical analysis the data looks to be very positive. 


Our advice at this time is to be cautious. If you decide to try one or more of these supplements look toward a combination pill with horny goatweed, maca and polypody. Make certain that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients and also that none of the ingredients are contraindicated because of any other medication you are taking.
